We’ve all been there. You have a plan to save money on your groceries, you have your coupons and price matches ready to go and are anticipating a quick trip through the line and then the wheels just fall off. The cashier refuses to take your coupons even though you KNOW it’s a good coupon and there is no reason for any hassle. What do you do?
Well I know what you shouldn’t do. You shouldn’t ram the store manager with your cart, pull your gun out of your purse and start waving it around and pointing it at Walmart employees. But yet that is exactly what a Florida woman did. Fortunately that ended without anyone getting hurt but I know EXACTLY how that woman felt. There have been times that I have wanted to wrap my shopping cart around the head of a cashier that has no earthly idea what Walmart’s coupon policies are but that doesn’t stop them from just making them up on the fly.
So what should you do?
#1 Most Importantly, STAY CALM AND SMILE! If you are likable and genial, you find that most problems stop before they start.
#2 If they still won’t take one, you need to assess the situation. You need to get a member of management involved and you need to figure out the easiest way to do that. If the line is not crazy long behind you, have the cashier call for the CSM or their immediate superior. If it’s super busy, have the cashier remove the items from your order that you were using the coupons on, finish the rest of your order and head to the Customer Service Desk.
#3 If a member of management will not take a coupon, just leave. You aren’t getting anywhere. Use the Contact page on Walmart.com or call 800-WALMART to tell Walmart exactly what happened. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP! They need to know what is going on in their stores so they can fix it.
#4 Call your store between the hours of 8-5 M-F and ask to speak to the store manager. Usually, the store manager knows the policies and will be willing to work with you to get the situation worked out.
I hear a lot of horror stories from readers about Walmart cashiers not knowing what to do with coupons. It’s unfortunate but it does happen. If you will take a little time and follow the steps above, what you will find is that problems will eventually stop.
My personal store was very challenging at the beginning because it was a New Build with new employees at almost every position. It took time and effort but now I NEVER have any problems. Never might be overstating, let’s say my coupon problems happen very rarely.
