5 Ways to Deal with a Rude Walmart Cashier
It’s happened to all of us. You are in line, minding your own business, ready to check out and BAM! Out of nowhere you are hit with a rude cashier at Walmart. That cashier that thinks that using a coupon means you are stealing from the company. That cashier that thinks price matches come directly out of their paycheck. That cashier that has spent far too long on their feet and just can’t deal with another customer.
What do you do? We know what you WANT to do. Just drop the gloves and give that cashier a piece of your mind! I know that feeling but I also know it’s counter-productive. Fortunately, because of this blog I have become an expert in dealing with rude cashiers. Many times I have had readers contact me with stories about something that happened and I have felt obligated to step in and try to get it resolved. Here’s a helpful list of suggestions so you can handle the situation yourself.
1. Make sure it isn’t you.
I know, nothing justifies a rude cashier. They are being paid to be helpful and courteous and you aren’t but face facts, if you are rude, you are probably going to get rudeness in return. Smile. Be friendly. Remember that if you are using coupons, you represent all couponers. I have heard so many horror stories from the other side, stories of awful couponers, that it makes sense that they would not want to deal with us. Make sure you know what you are doing before you get in line.
2. Call the immediate supervisor
Usually there is a CSM floating around that can solve most issues and most of them want to hear if an associate was rude to you. I have had several instances where problems with a cashier were solved by a CSM, sometimes they will even move me over to an empty cash lane if I have a big order and check me out themselves and deal with the cashier after I leave.
3. Call the store manager
Go to the Walmart website, find your store and call the store manager during normal business hours. Tell them exactly what happened and who was involved. Believe me, they WANT to know. If they have a rude associate, they want to be able to deal with it as quickly as possible. No store manager wants to his employees offending customers and he/she not knowing about it.
4. Call the District Manager
There is no easy way to figure out who they DM is for your district except to ask at the store level for his or her phone number. If you have burned every bridge at your Walmart and don’t want to talk to them, call the next closest Walmart.
5. Call Corporate
Walmart’s customer service number is 800-WALMART or you can email them here. Remember to be concise and precise and know the name of your cashier. It’s never taken me more than a few hours to get a response.
That should do it. I’ve never had a situation that wasn’t resolved as long as I followed the steps. It is also important to say that you should ALWAYS follow these steps with EVERY rude Walmart Associate. That employee needs to know that there are consequences for rudeness and either shape up or ship out.
One other thing that should be talked about is if you have an amazing experience with a Walmart cashier, follow the same steps above to let people know. Trust me, if you spend any amount of time at a Walmart, you want the good cashiers rewarded so they stick around and the bad cashiers weeded out.
That should do it! I want to hear your story. If you have had a bad experience with a Walmart Associate, please leave a comment telling what happened and how you handled it.

I was at Walmart today and the cashier was less than friendly. There was no greeting in the beginning or the end. And the only question I had wasn’t responded to in a polite manner. After I walked away, she was more than polite to the man behind me and I took notice right away. I mumbled to myself as I walked away with wow and nice…Unfortunately I did not take her name. I could have made a complaint but did not..I thought to myself that this person should not be working as a customer service rep…

I am a CSM and I always want to know what happened that made your visit bad so I can fix it if I can. HOWEVER, remember that store associates have NO control over coupon/ad matching policies, pricing, stocking, or many other things. Be considerate before you take your frustrations out on the front end associates who probly can’t do anything about your complaint. If you are nice and courteous, most of us are nice and courteous as well!

As you say most, I am a vendor and was doing my job had an extremely rude dept co manager step up into my personal space and yell at me. I called the store manager and corporate and filed a complaint , the store manager was going to look at tapes of her doing it, but I still see her in the store so I am sure no action was taken and I am expected to deal with her. I was afraid when this incident occurred. Not all walmart employees are nice.An associates in management doesn’t mean you own walmart.

For every 1 rude cashier there are 1 billion rude customers. A customer can say pretty much anything to us cashiers and we have to take it so it shouldn’t be so hard for you to let it go if a cashier is a tiny bit “rude” to you. The fact that you take the extra time to complain and get the cashier in trouble just proves what a horrible excuse for a person you really are.
And for the record, price checks and coupons do bring huge negative to us cashiers. We are monitored for our average scans per hour, and people with tons of coupons reduces our scans per hour which gets us in trouble. Then we also have to make sure that the coupon is valid (and many try to pay with ones that aren’t) and if it’s not and we put it through we get in troubleso yeah if you come with a bunch of price matches and coupons the cashier is going to be annoyed and less friendly BECAUSE OF YOU. They shouldn’t be flat out rude if you are nice and understanding, but you are making their job worse with your coupons.
Walmart should simply ban people like you from shopping. In fact it should be illegal for people like you to shop anywhere. go starve to death

I used to be a Walmart cashier and I have worked with many rude cashiers that didn’t wanna take the time to help people. When I dealt with the public always treated the customers the way I would want to treated. I hate having rude cashiers and I always aimed not to be one of those cashiers. I no longer work for Walmart but I had some of the most awesome customers anyone could ask for.

What can Walmart cashiers do about rude customers? We can’t call their immediate supervisor.

I guess you will just have to do job calmly and professionally.

Take a deep breath. Smile. Tell yourself that grouch could be your Grandma, and you wouldn’t want anyone to treat your Granny rudely no matter how rude she is/ was. Remember this job puts food on your table, keeps the lights on and the roof over your head. Not everyone is blessed to have s job. Tomorrow is a new day. Remember to thank God at the beginning and end of everyday, for everyday on this earth is a gift.

You do your job and ignore the rudeness. As it was stated, you are being paid to be there. Customers aren’t. And while no one should have to deal with rudeness on either side of the register, you know what you’ll be up against when you take the job. I’ve worked at a Wal-Mart, so I can say that. I was being paid to be helpful. Sometimes I just had to work a little harder than usual to be that to some

Hi I was in Walmart today CSM came up to the register to check all my coupons. Every time I go in the she hararrasses me. I’m really tired of going in there and she watches what I’m buying and what I’m checking out with!

Is it true that coupon circulars to price match are only accepted in a 30 mile radius ?told to me by customer service from a store about 40 miles farther.
Aarn Farmer
It’s “local”. What is local is up to each store and 30 miles seems like a pretty good distance.

This happened quite a few years ago, but I have never forgotten it. I was just getting back in town, (Urbandale, Iowa), from a nice trip to Colorado on a visit to my brother. It was an almost 12 hour trip and I decided to stop at Walmart to get a bottle of wine and some treats for my cat. I went to check out and the young guy in line asked for my id. I was 35 and told him that but he needed to see it. After searching my purse, I realized it was not there. I had been giving a warning for speeding and realized I had left it in the car with my warning. I instead asked if an old military id , (I served in the Air Force and kept the id because it has my blood type and religious affiliation), would work and he said he needed to ask a manager. The manager,(a short, heavyset young female), came over and decided to inspect my id ad read it. She then said well, I have never seen a militaryid like this and it says on it that it is for military personnel or voluteers. She was EXTREMELY loud and rude ad several people were starting to notice. I then said, well, how about this..is this real? (I took out a picture of myself at my Air Force graduation). She then became more rude and said, No, this will NOT work. I was so mad and the people around me were in disbelief. The poor kid said sorry ad I asked for the manager’s name. Ironically, it was Veteran’s Day the next day and I came back to the store and asked for the GM. He came right away and I proceeded to tell him the situation and to show him my id. He apologized profusely and thanked me for my service. He said he would take care of the situation. I don;t know what happened after that, but I have a feeling she was severely reprimanded. So, I went to Target, (was not asked for id), and upon returning to that Walmart many times, never encountered that “lovely” female manager again. That is my bad Walmart story , but unfortunately I found this blog because I just had another bad encounter at a store in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Fortunately, the large majority of cashiers are very helpful and friendly, in my experience.

Had a bad experience with Walmart cashier today. I have not been through a cashier line in a long time as I prefer to use self checkout. So I told my husband I am tired let the cashier do the bagging today. Big mistake! We had to come to Lexington Tennessee Walmart because our branch bank had closed in Huntingdon Tennessee a year ago. We deposited a check and proceeded to Walmart in Lexington. We made our selections around 47.00 worth. Get to the check out. Our bill is totaled. Groceries bagged and placed in the buggy. Our debit card would not work. I forgot the check was not cleared yet. My mistake! We had a balance of around 40. 00. So we did not have enough available to purchase 47.00 worth. So I had her remove two items and our card still wouldn’t take. So I told the girl to allow us to step aside and see what we needed to do to at least make some of our purchase. She killed our transaction and started dumping the groceries out in the buggy like sacks of garbage. Never saying a word to us. I could not believe what I saw. I could not believe not even a word out of her mouth. My husband was humiliated. We proceeded to leave. But I could not! I wanted to talk to a manager. So I did. I told her that the cashiers behavior was disrespectful. The manager wanted to know how she could make it right. I told her how can you reverse your cashiers behavior. Sure I might have miss figured my available balance. But haven’t we all at one time or another. The cashier never said a word to us. I just can’t get the image of her dumping the groceries we had selected to purchase out in the buggie like garbage out of my head. I felt like that was her way of saying you don’t have money to pay so get the hell out! We will not return to Lexington walmart again. Her lack of communication and her body language dumping those groceries said it all!
